The Geology of Wine


As a geologist with an interest in wine, Jennifer takes more than a passing interest in what lies beneath vineyards. She first presented a talk on The Geology of Wine at the Geological Society meeting in memory of Jake Hancock in 2005.

She now talks on the subject to varied audiences, be they professional geologists, wine lovers or both.

Jennifer argues that where there is a deep cover of drift or a deep soil horizon, geological influence will be minimal as only during periods of drought will vines draw significant water from more than 2 metres below the surface.  Conversely, where the soil is thin, geology will control the quality of the grapes indirectly through influence on soil composition, geomorphology and water retention.
Jennifer also examines examples of instances where geology, in particular the porosity and permeability, does have a direct influence on wine quality.

Many wine writers who are not geologists have dutifully described the geology associated with particular wine regions without actually stating how the geology is important.  This has probably resulted in the importance of the geology being over-rated. Jennifer now puts this all into perspective by describing the conditions under which geology does or does not have an impact on wines produced in particular areas.
